Getting Ready to Ride a Kid ATV
There are very few things more enjoyable for kids than riding an ATV. However, there are a few lessons every rider (especially a kid) should learn while getting ready to ride a kid ATV. Here are a few of them:
#1: Watch What You Wear
Every rider should wear a helmet at all times. Proper eye protection should also be worn. Chest, knee, and elbow protectors are also an option.
While getting ready to ride a kid ATV the rider should also put on long pants and a long sleeved shirt no matter how warm it is outside. Also, boots should be worn and gloves are a good idea as well.
#2: Safety First
Always review all the safety rules with the rider when getting ready to ride a kid ATV. Make sure the rider knows what is acceptable behavior and what isn’t acceptable behavior.
For smaller riders, the gear shift can be removed. Usually it’s recommended the ATV is put into second gear for this. The ATV will start out slowly but it won’t hurt the vehicle at all and it will limit its speed.
#3: Start Slowly
Riding an ATV or a similar recreational vehicle can be quite difficult to master. The way the brakes, shifter gear, starter, clutch, etc. work need to be practiced as well.
I remember as a kid letting my friend ride my dirt bike. I told him how to shift and how to let off the clutch. It took him a few tries but eventually he got going. However, I neglected to tell him where the brake was located. He could’ve just let the bike coast and eventually the engine would have cut out but he didn’t know that either. So he dumped the bike.
He wasn’t hurt but I learned a valuable lesson: Always make sure a rider knows everything there is to know before they start operating any type of machine.
While getting ready to ride a kid ATV, the rider should get used to sitting on the ATV and then steering it before the engine is even started.
Then after they’ve been taught about how everything works, an adult should run beside them holding the engine kill switch just in case.
Even when the rider seems ready to ride a kid ATV without any help, he/she should still be supervised at all times.
Riding an ATV is a lot of fun for adults and children alike. However, while younger riders are getting ready to ride a kid ATV, they need to be prepare correctly. This means that the kid should put on the proper clothes and protection, be instructed on all the safety rules, and be taught exactly how to ride the ATV.
