I had decided it was time to experience something that little bit special. With no time wasted I set out to try some of the higher end Quad bike and see how they fared both On Road and Off road.

Firstly when trying to decide which one I wanted to try I went and talked to a few of the people who have experienced Quad Bikes for many years. Once I had got all the basics of which ones to look at, off I went with my legal credentials so that I could test drive a couple of bikes to see what they were like.

Yamaha had only recently swapped the old 660 none fuel injection for the 700R fuel injected single overhead cam – and boy how different they would be when tested side by side.

The 660 I tried had done about 2000 miles and sounded like someone had thrown small stones into the exhaust system whilst it sat on tick over. But, as soon as you lifted the revs from the idle 800rpm that small tinkering noise disappeared.

I donned my helmet and gloves and off I went, rolling tamely down the road to get a feel of the response, handling and general road holding of the bike. First impression was that it felt very soft and moved around on the front end a fair bit, but this could be rectified for sure, and for only a few pounds.

Having gone through some lanes and over a couple of fields I found it was great fun, had all the guts needed and did run very well on different surfaces.

Within an hour I was back at the dealership begging for the 700R as my thoughts were very much: “Given the small faults I had found, they would have managed those easily on the new model!”

Wrong!

The engine did sound remarkably different and, had only covered about 300 miles less than the 660 I rode earlier. Again, slid on my lid and off I went taking the same route as earlier.

Oh my god, Yamaha had done something wrong surely – this Quad Bike had the handling like Bambi on Ice!

It was awful to ride in a straight line and needed some serious modifications to keep it from snapping at the front and directing me into the side of the road – surely this had been adjusted wrongly and the apprentice had set the tracking wrong?

It appeared not to be the case. After returning to the dealership I talked seriously with the technical guys and they confirmed the horrible nature of the handling and told me to try a “modified” version to get the true feel.

luckily, one was at hand and within minutes I was back off and testing something which looked the same yet probably looked a little lower – but that was it.

This was so different, you pointed it and it went the direction you wanted it to. How amazingly different from my earlier experience, this bike didn’t leap around and was far more stable on the road plus, you could feel the front end lifting as you accelerated away.

Off road was a complete hoot, you had the feeling of complete stability when pushing the back end out as you turned and with no fear it would lift on one side.

My mind was made up, I returned to the dealer and placed my order that day. These are the modifications that were done to the test bike I took out:

* Both the front and read shocks had been wound in nice and tight so there was very little rebound .
* Two inch spacers had been placed on the back wheels creating the stability
* Both the front and read suspension had been dropped by three inches. This was what stopped the front end from grabbing the tarmac so heavily making it feel like you were going into the ditch>

The total cost of the adaptations was just short of 180GBP – and probably the best money I could have spent on the bike.

Fun on 4 wheels?

When I first caught glimpse of this Quad Bike early 2009 I thought “Oh my god, it’s another one of those Sinclair episodes!”

How wrong was I?

Cectek have gone completely mad by developing something the market was working towards but with some love and attention on features that other manufacturers try and charge you extra for. Whilst being very careful with what they did, there was no compromise on quality and production.

Styled with some extra fun, the Cectek Quadrift 500 EFi has pulled up extremely close to the mark and bordering on something else. Not only have they filled one gap in the Quad Bike market but have also created another, which once you have taken the time to ride one you will fully understand what I mean.

With an extremely low centre of gravity they have thrown the cards down and said: “Do you want some fun?”

Personally, I think that this is something we could ALL do with in our lives to take away the blues of modern day political torture and news that’s fit for people who have nothing better to do.

What these guys have done is take something that was or has been very bland for some time and added two extra lumps of sugar to sweeten it up. Extra low centre of gravity makes this bike handle like it is on rails, and with the punch packing 500cc EFi power plant you will light the blue touch paper and watch this rocket explode.

The return of a 30+ childhood maybe? And it doesn’t stop just there!

Talk about being thoughtful, (or is this marketing gone mad) they have also included a Goose Bump lifting experience called “Drifting Transmission.” Now you MUST have got the drift? (Sorry…)

Switch from limited slip differential into drifting mode and you will have that back end fully locked and working just like Roger Clark’s Mk1 Ford Escort back in the ’70s. This one feature alone will leave you pushing those eyes back in their sockets leaving you bags of time to enjoy the experience and amazing control.

And if that’s not enough, they refuse to charge you for things like alloys and digital dash (unlike some manufacturers I could mention) Here is just a snip of what you can expect:

* Chassis – Something they call “UCS” which means Ultra Secure Chassis
* Suspension – Fully independent Suspension with adjustable shocks
* Wheels – Alloys as standard with low profile tyres
* Brakes – Dual 250mm front and rear brake discs
* Instruments – Racing effect dials in LCD giving multi function display

And when I say multi-function, there is more to play with than your average games console!

Is this fashion gone completely barking, or clever design and marketing?

Personally I think it is a good mixture of both with a twist of extra strength in the design department. There is one thing I will guarantee (apart from the obvious fun that is), give the industry 6 to 12 months and I will stand on these words – they will all be making something pretty much the same but more expensive.

As for Cectek (or see-tek as they like to be known) have already got the next stage of this machine in the design shop. As for you, well you will find it difficult to get one come spring next year because of the heavy demand – so don’t wait for the sale, because there will not be one!

Kids All terrain vehicles (ATV’s) are used very harshly and can be very difficult to maintain if a routine maintenance is not included in their upkeep. Breakdowns can occur when driving and engine failure can also become a big issue. Maintaining the ATV is a mandatory job; some people don’t follow the basics and end up spending huge amounts of money on the repairs. However, once the damage is done there is no going back to the real thing.

Olson Powersports reccomends maintaining an ATV includes different steps which can be performed one after the other at least once every 3 months. Some steps include:

1. Engine Maintenance: Engine maintenance includes taking care of the spark plugs, changing the oil and taking care of the other major elements of the engine.

2. Spark Plugs: Due to the rough treatment of the engine on different sorts of terrains, the spark plugs get carbonized and can become a problem if the tips of the spark plugs are not cleaned every 3 months. The carbon stops the electricity flow to the engine hence reducing the horsepower and killing the throttle.

3. Oil: Oil and filter change are mandatory in maintaining an ATV. If not changed periodically, you may end up with a muddy engine block and bad oil which would harm the engine.

4. Block Treatment: The engine block as a whole need to be checked and cleaned every 6 months. While changing the oil you can use pressure pumps to clean the block and also force the unwanted oil deposits which can be harmful to the flow of the pistons.

5. Suspension Maintenance: ATV’s are one of the hardest running vehicles when it comes to different terrains usage. The suspension is the part of the Quad Bike used the most, especially when you’re dealing in muddy or gravel terrains.

6. ATV Boots: The rubber covers on the axels are called Boots. These ATV boots take the most about of terrain thrown bumps as they are in direct contact with the hub of the wheel and the ATV axel. The boots can be torn easily if in contact with rocky terrains as well, therefore exposing the joints which are vulnerable to breakage.

7. ATV Inner Joints: The inner joints are vulnerable to breakage and tearing issues. They come directly under the ATV Boots and if the boots are torn, the joints are exposed which causes them to break because of direct contact with the terrain.

These are essential parts of the ATV and you can get kids atvs on http://olsonpowersports.net These and others need to be checked, maintained, and if necessary, replaced. Maintaining an ATV is not a hard thing if the parts like ATV Boots or ATV Inner Joints are being monitored, and the oil changing is timely.

Thanks, Kevin
